What does a weather radar show?

A weather radar sends out pulses of energy that bounce off raindrops, hail, or snow. The returning signal is displayed as coloured blobs on a map. Green usually indicates light rain, while yellow, orange, and red show heavier precipitation. You can use it to see if rain is heading your way within the next hour or two.

How do I read a radar map?

Look at the time stamp on the map to ensure it is current. The radar image updates every 6 to 10 minutes. Watch the movement of rain bands over several frames to judge direction and speed. Why is it spelled “rader” sometimes?

“Rader” is a common typo or autocorrect error for “radar.” The correct term is radar, which stands for Radio Detection and Ranging. Always search for “weather radar” to get accurate results.

Can I use radar to predict rain hours ahead?

Radar is best for short-term nowcasting (0–2 hours). For longer forecasts, combine radar with satellite images and Bureau of Meteorology models. Check severe weather warnings for official alerts.

Does radar work in all weather?

Radar can be blocked by mountains or affected by “anomalous propagation” (false echoes from temperature inversions). It also struggles to detect very light drizzle or snowflakes far from the site. Always cross-check with local observations.
